ITIL Version 5 Overview

What is ITIL?

ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is the most widely recognized framework for IT service management globally. It provides best-practice guidance for managing and delivering IT services to create organizational value through technology.

Beyond traditional IT service management, ITIL has expanded into digital product and service management, integrating advanced digital tools, business model shifts, and customer engagement strategies. The framework now unifies product and service management concepts that were historically treated separately.

By the Numbers

  • 3+ million professionals certified in ITIL globally
  • 82% of Fortune 500 companies use ITIL
  • Present in more than 150 countries
  • Continuously updated from 1989 to present

ITIL Version 5: A Major Step Forward

Launched in January 2026, ITIL v5 represents the first major update since ITIL 4 (2019). It builds upon proven ITIL 4 concepts while addressing contemporary technology and business environments.

The framework is now "complexity- and AI-native," incorporating the value system model, value chain and streams, management practices based on the Four Dimensions, continual improvement model, and Guiding Principles. New additions include a digital product and service lifecycle model, enhanced focus on digital experiences, and organizational transformation guidance.

Core Vision

"Digital products and digital services are not two separate things replacing each other; they are two sides of the same digital technology solution that delivers business value."
